Bergesen Pitches O's Past Angels

Brad Bergesen sparkled, the O's defense dazzled and the offense did just enough to give the Birds a series-opening 3-1 victory against the Angels on Friday night.

Bergesen (6-9) went eight strong innings to pick up the win, allowing just four hits while walking none and fanning four. Bergesen allowed a run to cross the plate in the first inning on a balk (he was called for a second balk later in the game) but kept his composure and completely dominated the Angel's lineup.

Koji Uehara pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his third straight save in three appearances...

The Birds managed three runs off eight hits; Mick Markakis gave the Birds a quick (though short-lived) 1-0 lead in the first inning. Brian Roberts opened the game with a double and stole third base before Markakis drove him home. Luke Scott and Corey Patterson both plated runs in the later innings to give the O's a cushion...

With three games left in August, the Birds need to win just one to post their first winning August since 1997...thank-you, Buck Showalter! Kevin Millwood takes the mound for the O's on Saturday night.
