Jeremy Guthrie wasn't at his best, and the O's fell just shy of a series win against the Mariners after losing 6-5 on Wednesday night at Camden Yards.
It was the second time the Birds have dropped two straight since Buck Showalter took over, and the team's second consecutive series loss.
Guthrie wasn't bad; he just wasn't the ace we've seen since the All-Star Break. Guthrie gave up six runs (five earned) off eight hits over eight innings, walking one and fanning three.
The Birds jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning off Luke Scott's two-run single, but failed to score again until the seventh inning, when Matt Wieters slapped a two-run bomb that put the O's within a run. The Orioles had the tying run in scoring position with just one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Brian Roberts struck out and Nick Markakis grounded out to end the game.
The Birds host the Texas Rangers for a four-game set starting Thursday night. It will be the first time Showalter faces his former team. Brian Matusz is slated to take the mound...
